| TESTIMONY OF AN ALCOHOLIC--FROM AGE 9! Larry’s story begins: At the age of 9, I had my first drink of alcohol. It changed me and I think that was when I started not caring much about what was happening to me. I married at the age of 19 and had two kids with my first wife, a boy and a girl. I went to Valley Hope in Norton, KS at the age of 23. I felt like I was on a “treatment high” when I left but didn’t do any follow-up program and started drinking and using drugs again. I moved to Wakeeney and worked for an electrical power company for twelve years. When I was 31 years old, because of my addiction, my first wife left me and took my kids with her—22 years after I took that 1st drink of alcohol! And even then I still didn’t stop drinking. I then remarried; and that marriage didn’t last very long. Most of the time my “higher power” was drugs and alcohol. I continued drinking and using drugs, seeking help through countless numbers of people and treatment centers, halfway houses and churches; but didn’t give God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit a chance to completely change my life. Now, today, I rely on knowing that it is through Christ Jesus my Lord and Savior that “all things are possible”. It’s been over nine months since I first walked through the doors of the Union Rescue Mission and it’s given me hope for a future. I have no more cravings for alcohol or drugs anymore. Through the “New Beginnings” Program of the Union Rescue Mission I have been given a Christ-centered foundation that’s Biblically based and is the only way I truly want to live. I thank God for guiding me to this place. God Bless the Union Rescue Mission. NOTE: Since the time Larry wrote this testimony of his “life-change” he has graduated from the New Beginnings Program, and is currently working part-time at the URM while pursuing a career in the area of serving others in the healthcare arena. - Larry C. , Click here to listen to audio testimonial. |
